Job Description

Tasks assigned to this position may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.

Purpose of Your Job Position  

The primary purpose of your job position is to provide each of your assigned areas of the facility with routine monitoring and services as may be directed by your supervisors.  

Delegation of Authority  

As a  RESIDENT SAFETY MONITOR , you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.  

Job Functions

Major Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. Monitor assigned areas, as directed by shift supervisor.  
  2. Assigned area is walked, monitored and reported on to Certified Nursing Assistants, Charge Nurses and shift supervisors.  
  3. Distributes drinking water and other nourishments to residents, as directed.  
  4. Assisting in redirecting residents if necessary.  
  5. Answers residents' needs, anticipates needs and makes rounds to assigned areas.  
  6. Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.  
  7. Attends in-service education programs to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc.  
  8. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment and practices careful, efficient and non-wasteful use of facilities supplies and resources.  
  9. Adheres to policies and procedures of the facility and the department of Nursing.

Staff Development  

  1. Attend and participate in annual OSHA and CDC in-service training programs for hazard communication, TB management, and bloodborne pathogens standard.  
  2. Be an active member of the Infection Control Policies and Procedures for the facility and as directed by the Infection Control Preventionist/ Coordinator.  

Safety and Sanitation  

  1. Wash hands before and after performing any service for the resident.  
  2. Immediately notify the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any resident leaving/missing from the facility.  
  3. Keep residents’ personal possessions off the floor and properly stored, report any violations immediately.  
  4. Keep floors dry. Report spills immediately.  
  5. Report all safety violations, according to facility policies and procedures.  
  6. Follow established smoking regulations. Report all violations.  
  7. Report any communicable or infectious disease to the Director of Nursing Services and/or to the Infection Control Preventionist/ Coordinator.  
  8. Wash hands before entering and after leaving an isolation room/area.  
  9. Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.  
  10. Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies when lifting or moving, as indicated.  
  11. Report missing/illegible labels and MSDSs to your supervisor.  

Equipment and Supply Functions  

  1. Use only the equipment you have been trained to use.  
  2. Operate all equipment in a safe manner.  

Working Conditions  

  1. Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., dining rooms, nurses’ stations, resident rooms, etc.).  
  2. Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.  
  3. Communicates with nursing personnel and other department personnel.  
  4. Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.  
  5. Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.  

Education  

  1. Must possess, as a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.  
  2. May have a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant in accordance with laws of this state.  

Experience  

None required. On-the-job training provided.  

Specific Requirements  

  1. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.  
  2. Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.  

Physical and Sensory Requirements  

(with or without the aid of mechanical devices) 

  1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.  
  2. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.  
  3. Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.  
  4. May be required to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds.  

Reporting Relationship  

The  RESDIENT SAFETY MONITOR is supervised by a Charge Nurse, Unit Manager, the DSD and the DON.
