The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic and Staff Services Manager I (SSMI) (Specialist) to join our team. This role requires exceptional communication skills—both verbal and written—and the ability to interact professionally and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including employees, control agencies, and departmental leadership.

Under the general direction of the Deputy Commissioner, Administration and Licensing Services Branch (ALSB), the Staff Services Manager I (SSMI) (Specialist) serves as a highly- skilled program specialist and consultant to the Deputy Commissioner and Branch Division Chiefs on the strategic goals of the branch. The incumbent independently manages, oversees, and leads implementation of strategic priorities of the ALSB. The incumbent is expected to consistently demonstrate a high degree of initiative, good judgement, effectiveness in working with others, and independence with performing assigned tasks.

Duties include but are not limited to: independently developing branch communications, developing and conducting branch audits, tracking and monitoring branch projects and high- priority assignments, identifying branch strategic initiatives, and serving as branch project manager, in an effort to support the goals of the California Department of Insurance (CDI) ALSB. Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025 and related Pay Differential 386. PLP 2025 requires employees to receive a reduction in pay in exchange for monthly hours of PLP 2025 leave credits. Working Conditions

  • This position is located in Sacramento and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, with employees required to report to work in-person at 300 Capitol Mall, Sacramento, CA 95814. Alternative work locations will not be considered.
  • Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview but must show proof of residence in California prior to being eligible for appointment.
  • Daily use of computer keyboard, mouse, camera for virtual meetings, office equipment, telephone, and related software applications at a work station.
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a high rise building.
  • The incumbent may telework in accordance with CDI's Telework Policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.
